Concertmaster Series: Mythic Proportions Knoxville Concert reviews
Bon Iver and Vernon: A study in synergy.
If you were on the internet back in 2007, you likely came across For Emma, Forever Ago. The debut album of a falsetto-singing, enigmatic lyricist artist. The most prominent aspect of the album appeared to be the desolate, secluded essence of the songs, recorded up 'in his father's cabin in the woods,' if you recall the much-touted lore.
Vernon is probably fed up with hearing that, suffice to say.
Symphonic Concertmaster Series: Mythic Proportions self-titled album is a masterpiece. Undoubtedly the same artist, but bursting with its unity, its revelation, and retaining only the most essential characteristics of the initial release; his falsetto, mysterious lyrics, and the ability to redefine the term: "influenced by music."
Live, Vernon and his (8 Piece!) supporting band achieve just that; preserving the connecting thread between the first two albums and enhancing, complementing, and reconstructing the existing beauty. My goodness, did they indeed. When the initial notes of Perth began to play to kick off the evening, an inevitable smile spread across my face, and as my body swayed to the music, I sensed the entire audience community becoming captivated by Vernon. The sound, I should mention, was outstanding. I was right in front of the stage and it sounded so fantastic. Concertmaster Series: Mythic Proportions understands dynamics and how to make them truly impactful. I cannot vouch for other areas in the venue, but I could not have been more pleased with the sound up close.
Not much of a showman, the lack is hardly noteworthy as his sincere, humble gratitude was all that seemed necessary to transition into these emotionally revealing intimate songs. Prior to witnessing them perform, I feared that, with the full band arrangement, some of the atmosphere and feeling of the solitary first album's songs might be lost; that the accompaniment would seem too forced, too obvious. However, they succeeded in taking those expertly crafted tracks and enhancing their delivery. I could not have had a more satisfying experience with Concertmaster Series: Mythic Proportions's music.
Dave needs a belt!
Concertmaster Series: Mythic Proportions is one of them, and I only pay this kind of $$ to see a handful of performers. He was still funny, but there were a couple of distractions for me to fully enjoy the show. He lit up several cancer sticks throughout the show and put them out on the floor of a smoke-free venue, and his pants were too big and slipping down. Although he wasn't his very best, I didn't quite feel ripped off. If I was in the front, this would probably be a one-star review. I didn't recall him doing this at the last performance (same venue a few years back), but I was actually glad to be sitting in nosebleeds this time since it sold out quickly. I wish him well, still a genius though.
